The
Jumo turbo-jets powering the Me-262 were rushed into production
before the underlying technology had been perfected. The engine
required delicate handling of the throttle.
Pouring
on the gas too quickly could burn out the turbine, too slowly
and an engine flame-out might occur. The Jumo had an extremely
short service life. On average, an overhaul would have to be conducted
after just 25 hours of operation.
Nonetheless,
the 1,984 pounds of static thrust created by the engine provided
the fighter with unprecedented power.
